The most important factor, in getting the best result by grinding without wasting any time, is Grinding Wheel Selection according to the required grinding wheel application. There are different factors which one has to look into before selecting the right grinding wheel.

1.Grain

The type of grain as abrasive used in particular wheel is chosen on the base of the way it interacts with the work material.

ALUMINUM OXIDE is the most common abrasive used in grinding wheel. It is used to grind carbon steel, alloy steel, high-speed steel, wrought iron, and bronzes.

ZIRCONIA ALUMINA is another type of abrasives grain. This is used mainly for grinding application such as a cut off operation on a broad range of steel & steel alloys.

SILICON CARBIDE is also another type of abrasives used for grinding chilled iron, gears, soft bronze and aluminum and also rubber, non-ferrous material, and stones.

2. SIZE

Once we finalize grain type second thing we have to check is the grit size required. Grit size is the size of individual abrasive grains in the wheel. It means the number of openings per linear inch in the final screen size used to measure the size of the grains. Higher the size, smaller is the size of grains lower numbers (such as 10, 16, or 24) denote a wheel with coarse grain. The coarser grain allows large stock removal from the desired surface. The higher number (such as 70, 100, and 180) is fine grit wheels.

4. POROSITY

This signifies the structure from (1) set to (17) most open structure .density is a ratio of bond and abrasives to airspace. A more open structure will cut more freely and also allows deep cuts as the dip clearance will be more.

5. WHEEL GRADE

From (A) SOFT to Z (HARD). This determines how tightly the bond holds the grains. The harder is the material which has to grinded, the softer is the grade used to grind wheel and vice versa.
